About the Project

The No Longer on My Own (NOLOMO) project is funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada and the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women.

This research project is designed to understand the access to justice barriers and challenges facing survivors of family violence within the justice system in Nova Scotia. Survivors of family violence may have to navigate multiple legal issues and systems including family law, child protection, criminal law, immigration, residential tenancies, and social services.

The NOLOMO project is researching the existing challenges and best practices in these areas, including the impact of COVID-19 on those who have experienced family violence.

Project Objectives:

The project is focused on providing practical materials and resources for and service providers and survivors. The project will research the following questions with the goal of understanding what substantive access to justice may entail for those experiencing family violence:

  • How does the justice system in Nova Scotia respond to a report of family violence?
  • What barriers, gaps or challenges exist for survivors of family violence who are navigating the justice system?
  • What best practices are already in place?
  • How has COVID-19 impacted survivors of family violence who are navigating the justice system?
